Saving too much – Elie in Toronto

I grew up in a household which constantly conserved money – my parents were very frugal and there were always discussion on how to save our money, rather than spend it. We didn’t have a lot of money growing up, so we were forced to conserve our money. So life went on, I never travelled, I never went on school trips, and I deprived myself of nights out on the town, all in an effort to save money. The problem was, I never had balance, instead of over-spending, I under-spent.

The fact of the matter is that even though I was in a very strong financial position when I graduated from university, I had missed a lot of life experiences and opportunities – things which are very valuable in hindsight. Proper financial management isn’t about over-spending or under-spending, it’s about balance – save your money, but have fun in life.
